Not Feeling Like Yourself? Maybe It's Burnout

Danielle Friedman, LMHC

This week on the blog we are talking about Burnout. The holidays are upon us and we want to make sure you’re supported. 🥺

Burnout is a state of mental, emotional and physical exhaustion brought on by prolonged periods of stress. Becoming a parent or global pandemic are common examples.

Because it develops over time, burnout tends to catch us off guard. It can feel as if overnight you’re struggling to juggle the things you’ve always been able to balance.

signs of burnout

  • Exhaustion: mental & physical (more than tired)

  • Inability to do more than what’s necessary

  • Increased irritability & cynicism

  • Increased numbing activities (i.e. TV watching, scrolling, eating comfort food)

  • Brain fog

There are ways to manage, prevent, heal burnout.

acknowledge the impact.

Are you taking yourself for granted? We often move so fast that we overlook all we do and how it impacts our mental and physical health. Take some time to see all that you do to care for yourself and loved ones. Write it all down. It doesn’t matter the size. Each one makes an impact.

take some time off.

If it’s possible, take some time off for just you. Despite any pulls you may feel to use your time off for productivity, don’t. If you’re burned out, what you really need is rest.

identify what you can control.

If burnout typically occurs as a result of prolonged exposure to uncontrollable stress, you need to gain some control. Something as simple as how you spend your lunch break could make a huge difference.

take care of your body.

Taking care of your body mentally and physically can significantly improve symptoms of burnout. Cutting corners with nutrition and sleep may seem productive, but could actually be holding you back. Talk to your provider about supplementation.

Burnout feels a little like being “zoned out”, but for an extended period of time. It can last for days, weeks or longer, if not cared for correctly.
